Salad Days: 1980-1990, A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC

Salad Days is a documentary about the punk music scene in DC during the 80's. It was produced by Scott Crawford, who was very much a part of this scene as a young boy publishing the fanzine, Metrozine. I had eagerly awaited the opportunity to view this, and was surprised to find it available on Hulu.

This documentary does a very good job of detailing most of the bands from this scene. The majority of the bands highlighted were signed to Dischord Records, which was the preeminent record label for this scene at the time. However, I felt that it did not dive far enough into the impact of certain bands, mainly Bad Brains and Scream. Very little time was given to these bands. I partially understand this though, because there were so many bands starting and splitting up during this time. I found it humorous when someone would be interviewed, and under their name it listed 3-5 different bands that they had played in.

It was great to see the archival and vintage performance footage of some of these bands, namely Minor Threat, Government Issue, Bad Brains, and The Teen Idles. It was also interesting to hear directly from the people that created the scene and kept it alive. People like Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, and so on. The only person I did not enjoy listening to was Mark Anderson, the founder of Positive Force. Positive Force is an activist organization that was centered around the punk community. Mr. Anderson tends to get a little overzealous in his recollections of the impact of his organization and what it did during that time. He always seems to be yelling at me. I don't like it.

Recently, the documentary series "Sonic Highways" produced by Dave Grohl (a product of the DC punk scene) featured the city of DC and the many musical influences from it, predominantly the 80's punk scene. Sonic Highways was much shorter and focused on multiple musical scenes, yet I feel that it did a better job of conveying the passion and excitement (and great music) from the punk scene than Salad Days which clocks in at an hour and a half and focuses solely on the punk scene. After viewing the Sonic Highways episode, I wanted to run right out and grab albums by these bands and I wanted to know more about the whole scene. After viewing Salad Days, I was just exhausted. Maybe it suffers from trying to say too much?

Where this documentary started to lose me towards the end, was when it became very evident that the artists from this scene still apparently carried a big chip on their shoulder regarding the rise of Grunge, specifically Nirvana. Some of them even stating that Nirvana and that whole scene would not have existed if it weren't for them. I don't know about that. True, the DC scene was influential, but not on a Beatles level of musical influence. All in all it was an enjoyable documentary if you are a music history nerd like me. Otherwise, just grab a copy of the Sonic Highways series and love your life.

Creating a habit

So this is my second post in as many days. I know these posts are rather small and lack any real content, but I'm trying to get in the habit of blogging.

I'm Going To Try This Again

I have attempted to write this blog multiple times. I am bound and determined to make it work this year. So bear with me. Thanks.

7 Quick Takes

My wife used to do this thing on her blog called "7 Quick Takes". I've discovered that it is easier to blog if I do it little blurts, so here are my Quick Takes for the week. They are in no particular order.

1. I hate the BCS

There are so many reason why I hate the BCS. I was reading an article this week that insinuated that an undefeated TCU could not and would not be picked to play in this years Championship game because of a certain loss last year. Hello! Did I just read that a game from a previous year would be part of the deciding factor in this year? That's absurd! The fact that that is even a possibility (and sadly, it is) is more than enough of a reason to end this stupid system. If you agree with me, check out this book:

And read this blog.

I have to stop writing about this. It's ruining my day.

2. I love my kids

Sure they frustrate me. That's their job. Sometimes they go to bed not liking me very much, and sometimes I go to bed not liking them very much. But when I wake up the next morning, I cannot wait to see their faces. Whether they are smiling or scowling (that would be Isaac), my day does not begin until I see them. They are so much alike and so unique all at the same time.

Tyler is just a frickin genius (with no common sense). He amazes me. And so creative too. He just blows me away. To see the world from his point of view is a privilege.

I've always described Isaac this way: he's not a child, he's an experience. You have not seen a kid that can combine so many emotions in such a short amount of space. And don't let him fool you. The kid is smart. Scary smart. The kinda smart that sneaks up on you and whops you in the head with a frying pan.

Nick. What do I say about Nick. The kid does not stop moving. Ever. And he has such insane control of his body and reflexes. And determination. Do not tell this kid he can't do something. He will prove you wrong. It's not a matter of if, but when. He loves his Daddy, but man, that kid is all about Momma. You do not mess with Nick's Momma, or you get a face full of Nick. For him, the world begins and ends with Momma.

I love my kids.

3. I love my wife

Emily gets me. She just gets me. She doesn't always like what she gets, but she gets me. She is my best friend. And there is nothing I wouldn't do for her. I don't just love her. I love her fiercely. She is such an amazing woman. So talented and gorgeous to boot. You should read her writing. She is so insightful (most of the time) and creative (all of the time).

4. Blogging is hard

This is diifficult. I'm running out of things to say. I think teaching has made me a better public speaker than I am a writer. That's a complete 180 for me.

5. 6. 7.

I'm ending my quick takes at 4. I liken my blogging to some movies. They roll along pretty good and they just stop.

Who I Am, Part 1

So, my wife told me I need to start blogging more often than the twice a year pace that I am currently at. So I am going to shoot for 3 or 4 posts a year. I guess I should start with a "Who I Am" kind of post. So here goes.

My name is Dan, or Daniel if I am in trouble, or Danny if you knew me before age 10. But for the bulk of my life, it has been just Dan. I am many things. It may take a few posts to cover them all. And chances are I will cover them in the wrong order and end up offending someone. But they'll get over it.

First, I am a husband. I met my beautiful wife when we were in high school. Yes, we are "high school sweethearts". No big deal though. It's not like we got a special bonus prize when we got married. Emily and I have been married for 10 years. Ten long years. I mean, 10 glorious years. Do we fight? Yes. Can I be turd at times? Yes. But I am in love and am infatuated with my wife. There is nothing I would not do for her. I love you Pookie.

That's good for now. Part two, I'll talk about my kids.

Family, Football, and Friends

Have you ever had family?  We have many mysteries in the world like the Bermuda Triangle, Bigfoot, UFO’s, Spongebob Squarepants.  But I think the biggest mystery might be families.  Have you ever looked at or known two people from the same family and wonder how they could be from the same family?  Two people can be raised in the same house, same parents, yada, yada, yada, and turn out so differently.  What’s even more interesting is how those people interpret their own family.  Same house, same parents, different experiences.  Sometimes it has to do with varying ages.  Sometimes it has to do with how they view their own lives.  What becomes frustrating is when one family member refuses to consider the fact that maybe their sibling didn’t experience the home the same way.  Maybe what was a happy time for them, wasn’t so happy for their brother or sister.  Why are we so stubborn to think that our experiences in a situation are the “real” experiences.  If you put seven people into the same room, at the same time, they will come out with seven different experiences.  My point in all of this is that we need to communicate.  Ask questions.  You say it was different for you and I don’t see how.  How was it different?  Help me to understand why you are dealing with issues and I have no issues (that I will admit).  You know the old saying.  Something borrowed, something blue, families suck.  Not really, but when the doo doo hits the fan, they may be all you got.

DSC01722                                            My boys.

On a happier note, it’s Friday!!!!! Another week of school down the drain and I survived.  Parent-Teacher conferences are coming up next week and I’m actually looking forward to them.  I have some issues that need to be dealt with.  There’s nothing more satisfying than telling a parent how dysfunctional their child is.

ESPN:  Notre Dame - USC Preview

Looking forward to the big Notre Dame-USC game this weekend.  It might actually be a good game.  Maybe a win for us Irish faithful?  We’ll see.  It’s got to be more exciting than the Tennessee Titans current “let’s get the first pick of the draft” tour.  So many things can go wrong, and most of them have.

The Tennessean: Titans still stuck in memories of ,08.

Speaking of football.  I want to give a shout out to my best friend Jeff.  When I moved East, he moved South.  Football just isn’t the same long distance on the phone.  Still good, but not the same.  I miss you Jeff!  I love you man! (envision a single tear rolling down my cheek).

In conclusion, remember, you can pick your nose, you can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your friends nose.  I’m out.
